Willys Jeepster poster. Launched on April 3, 1948 and codenamed "VJ" the Willys Jeepster looked great but was badly publicised and as such, sales were disappointing. Willys-Overland believed that the market for their military-style Jeep would be limited to farmers and foresters. However, the Jeepster was only offered with rear wheel drive and an under-powered 72hp engine. Had a higher powered, four-wheeled drive model been developed, the Jeepster story might have had a happier ending. As it was, only 19,132 were sold and production ceased in 1950 although some models were registered in 1951. Today, Jeepsters command excellent prices and are highly sought after by Jeep aficionados.
