Charles W. Cushman Collection

Charles Weever Cushman, amateur photographer and Indiana University alumnus, bequeathed approximately 14,500 Kodachrome color slides to his alma mater.

The photographs in this collection bridge a thirty-two year span from 1938 to 1969, during which time he extensively documented the United States as well as other countries.

Below are just a few with cars in the shots (of course). They give us a view of how we lived and what we drove.

The Charles W. Cushman photographic collection clearly displays the best early colour photos of the late 1930s, through the volatile World War II years, covering the 1950s & into the 1960s. I especially enjoy his vivid urban architectural street scenes of the Lower East Side, the Wall Street district, to busy downtown Chicago images, coupled with brilliant lens portraits from all across America.

For classic car spotters, Mr. Cushman's photos are a historical automotive researcher's dream come true. With each incredible photograph one wishes their were a hundred more different views.

Why don't they make any decent architechture any more? Everything they build these days looks really boring and unappealing.

I wish I better understood the 'sensibility' or perspective that was happening in the 40's & 50's of many artist.
These photographs are so simlar in style to Edward Hopper paintings.
The depth of the colors / muted tones / and general run down look of the old mansions and urban landscapes.

These are beautiful photos and represent at time where the world was changing ..possibly due to the mass production of the car and technology.
The photos should be assembled into a coffee table book or some sort of retrospective.

I see that 2 of the Chicago mansions have survived.

1801 S. Prairie and 4938 S. Drexel both look well preserved.

Have never seen a more fascinating collection of photos of the architecture of a lost America - and the Lincoln Zephyr is a beauty.
My favorite bldg. is the old Al Capone headquarters in Chicago; it looks like something out of a strange dream. Amazing to think that there was a time when it was a given that imagination and even flights of fancy were encouraged in architects.

I am absolutely stunned that Cushman's photography has survived and that all of you continue to celebrate it! Stunning angles and great movement! Brilliant captures in all of his travels!
