Gordon Murray Design is a new British company that aims to be the world leader in automotive design and reverses the current industry trend for sub-contracting by having a complete in-house capability for design, prototyping and development.
A unique and important aspect of this design group is that the team have a huge amount of experience of working together on class-leading projects. Collectively they have over 440 man years working in the automotive industry and in excess of 1850 man years of co-working experience resulting in a small, efficient and highly motivated group.
Unusually, these days, the entire team are multi-skilled and in conjunction with this a unique design and prototyping process has been developed, integrating CAD design, 3 dimensional assemblies and full size drawing to a level of efficiency which is unprecedented in the automotive industry.
During his visit H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh was introduced to key members of the team and had the opportunity to view full size mock-ups, wind tunnel models and various styling models which show the progression of T.25, as well as learning about some of the recycled materials proposed for use in manufacturing the T.25.
The T.25 is a radical, innovative design for a new type and class of personal transport vehicle which applies a “fit for purpose” approach to lightweight material usage in its construction to achieve an ultra-low vehicle weight. The manufacturing process is a complete re-think on the way we build cars and will totally transform automobile production.
Mid-way through the 24 month programme, work carried out to date is meeting schedule and budget targets and progress on design is showing that the weight and cost targets are also on track. Component design is almost complete with the first prototype build scheduled to begin in early 2009.
The most exciting aspect of this milestone in the programme is that ‘real world’ quotations for the new manufacturing process have shown that all the ambitious targets for a massive reduction in manufacturing, running and lifecycle CO2 damage reductions will be met or bettered.
The T.25 programme is not just about innovative vehicle packaging and lightweight design, it also offers solutions to reduce congestion and parking problems whilst addressing the problem of full lifecycle CO2 damage. It is designed to protect our mobility, personal freedom and driving ‘fun’ whilst greatly reducing the environmental damage from vehicle manufacture and running.
In short, the T.25 architecture, packaging and manufacturing process promises to be the biggest revolution in the mass production of cars in the last 100 years.
Interest in the T.25 programme has been world-wide and Gordon Murray Design is currently in discussion with several prestigious companies and groups regarding both the sale of the T.25 programme for volume production and other versions of vehicles using the same manufacturing process.
