On October 10, 2008 MDI launched The AirPod, a new eco-friendly vehicle in Nice.
Zero emission, two meters, six thousands Euros, four-seater and a camera for retro vision, its without any doubt an extraordinary proposal for our polluted big cities.
The aims of the product:
• To propose a solution to urban pollution.
• To improve urban mobility (traffic jams, parking)
• To introduce a concept that revisits the automobile and transport perception.
• To respond to the bid of the city of Paris for the “autolib” project (a self service car rental concept).
More than 350 people, politicians, journalists, investors and friends of the project responded positively to the invitation of this event. Organized in the MDI’s research and Development Centre near Nice, the day will be remembered for the launching of a new automobile concept that challenges all current standards and very promising for urban traffic issues.
With its small size, its low price, zero emission, its pleasant and futuristic design, the AirPod is a corner stone in the urban vehicles range. It is driven with a joystick and travelling with it costs €1 for 2OO KM. Its design has nothing to do with to the everlasting formats we have been seeing for years. The AirPod with its rounded shape easily find its way in the traffic, it announces a change and gives a preview of pollution free cities. It has a large volume inside and in spite of its small size that makes it easy to park, it makes us forget about the price of petrol. There are two versions of the AirPod, the first one, a three to four-seater for passenger transport and the other with a single seat and a large trunk for the transport of parcels or small deliveries.
One of the things to remember about this event is the signature of an agreement with the Town of Nice. Mr. Christian Estrozi has vouched to equip the town of Nice with eco-friendly vehicles and affirmed its support to MDI concerning the ecological projects launched by the “Alpes Maritime’s general council”. The signed agreement concerns the setting up of a fleet of MDI vehicles for the town. The AirPod will also be bidding for the "Autolib" concept of the city of Paris, which is the motorized version of the well-known "vélib" concept that has already change the Parisians’ customs. During the event two working Airpod were shown and they had raised the attention of investors. The license for the manufacturing of the Airpod is within the (less that 500 Kg MDI license) and it will be produced in the same plant as the OneFlowair, as per the original production concept imagined by MDI. It is estimated that production will start in spring 2009, the pilot lots being already in production.
The "FlowAIR" name that has been chosen to identify MID's technology replaces the previous "CATs" name, which meant "Compressed Air Technology systems", but was changed following a request of Caterpillar.
Apart from its literal meaning, FlowAIR is also a French wordplay for "flower" reminding both the ecological mind set of the company and their logo. The vehicles name will thus be followed by FlowAIR:
OneFlowAIR, MiniFlowAIR, CityFlowAIR, MultiFlowAIR.
AIRPod is the culmination of MDI studies on pollution and urban mobility. This concept will be the first to leave the production line in spring 2009. MDI will respond to an invitation to tender of the city of Paris, "Autolib", and is already the subject of applications for various municipalities.
With small size, a tiny price, zero pollution, fun and futuristic design, AIRPod mark a turning point in the range of urban vehicles while renewing the idea of the automobile and transportation. You can drive with a joystick, it only costs one euro per 200 km and leaves no one indifferent in crept in traffic.
It is a real breath of fresh air in our cities and the prelude to travel without pollution. Its small size make it easy to park, keeping still a large internal volume. AIRPod help us to forget the price of petrol.
AIRPod is part of the MDI production licence of "less than 500kg vehicles", and is manufactured in the same factories as OneFlowAir, following the original production concept proposed by MDI.
The standard version is designed for the transport of persons. It has four seats (3 adults and one child) and has space for luggage. It is dedicated to multiple uses as in the private and public sectors. Airports, train stations and municipalities also need a cheap, non-polluting car with high mobility.
"This vehicle is changing our urban life in the city center in freeing ourselves of the prohibitive cost of petrol and offering us mobility never gained until today."
This carriage version with a single place has a load volume greater than one meter cube that makes deliveries easy in town. Designed for runners, messaging, and the artisans and communities, Cargo AIRPod brings Zero Pollution in institutions. The Post, factory handling and delivery are markets of choice for AIRPod Cargo.
Two front seats and a chest of more than 500 liters, all for less than 1,80m long, it's the most extreme, a real challenge for car design. This model was created keeping in mind the most congested cities by traffic. It is a versatile which can also be used for deliveries, municipal services, roads and small logistics.
