That lump on the offside is a hand-cranked engine which powered ONE of the rear wheels. The Gordon only had one door (on the nearside).

It did have a foot crank for starting but also had an electric starter which was a Dynostart. This changed the polarity on the dynamo when used and turned it backwards thus starting the engine. I did work on the production team for this vehicle.

I actually owned a Gordon 3-wheel when I was A kid. I was informed that they were actually built in Kirkby (just outside Liverpool). At the time I often wondered who gave the go ahead to build this truly dreadful Villiers 197cc air cooled powered car - it was truly awful. For one thing, you had to kick start the engine then run, and I mean run, around to the other side of the car as you desperately tried to enter the car before the engine stalled, more times than not the engine stalled –so it was back to the kick start once again. Once it was up and running; the wind blow through the entire tin plated car –you could actually look down and view the passing tarmac as you drove. The brakes were a not very funny joke. I recall ‘my’ Gordon having three very large wheels, no spare of course. We christened them ‘Can’t Affords’ in Liverpool –that is can’t’ afford another wheel!
