Super Sedans

This is one of few automotive segments where the MSRP almost doesn't matter and owning one of these vehicles states that as clearly as who you are.

The super sedan. There is an impressive amount of four door sedans to choose from but few rise to this level of technology, luxury, options, engineering, design and attention to detail, which is unsurpassed and is almost a recent occurrence.

There is almost nothing you can't have and with some models, the sky is the limit for customization.

We're going to look at a few here, strictly based on availability in the US (there are even better ones available in Europe) and all from the manufacturer's websites.

You can't go wrong with any of these. Naturally, some are better known than others, some are more expensive and some simply have more caché but all will satisfy and at the end of the day, it mostly comes to personal preference and a thick wallet.

Here they are, in alphabetical order.

aston martin rapide s 13

2013 Aston Martin Rapide S.

Possibly the most beautiful car in this post, and perhaps the most expensive, with an MSRP of $226,850. The Rapide S is clearly the one that will make the loudest statement. With its all-new Rapide Gen 4 AM11 engine that generates 558 HP, it will get you from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds.

Astom Martin offers quite a few colors, but we went with their "Grey Bull" matched with the 10-spoke silver wheel and yellow calipers. From here, we ran into many problems with the online configurator, which was very awkward and not intuitive. Each section was very low on information and pricing, and even the summary was void of any totals. When I tried to get the info by downloading the PDF order form (for which there are two separate links on the same page) I got a warning from Chrome that "This type of file can damage your computer", so I stopped.

We added quite a few options, but have no clue what the total is.

2013 AUDI S8
audi s8 13

2013 Audi S8.

Audi bring to the table the S8, although they also have the S7, which most call a four-door coupe (of which there is no such thing) and is partially a hatchback but I say is a sedan. Despite my preference for this model, we will look at the S8, which has an MSRP of $110,895 and includes the $895 destination charge.

Its got a 4.0TFSI® engine cranking out 520 HP with an eight-speed Tiptronic® transmission with quattro® all-wheel drive and I've chosen my personal preference of the Ice Silver Metallic paint.

To this, we added the:
• Full Leather Package $5,500
• 21" Titanium Finish 5-arm Rotor Design wheels $250
• Bang & Olufsen® advanced sound system $6,300
• Night vision assistant $2,300
• Solar sunroof $800

And a few free ones, like
• Black Alcantara® headliner $0
• Leather shifter $0

We did experience a considerable amount of issues with the online builder, both in Safari and in Chrome we could not get the options to stick, or the colors to show, or the selected wheels to remain on the car in fullscreen view. We've had to add this up on our own because the site would not show the total of the options in the summary page.

The total for this car as built is $126,045.

bentley flying spur mulliner 13

2013 Bentley Flying Spur W12 Mulliner.

The 6 litre W12 engine developing 616 bhp can propel the 5,445 lb Flying Spur, which is available in two specifications, the Flying Spur W12 and the Flying Spur W12 Mulliner from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 200 mph all while offering serene limousine comfort in combination with phenomenal performance.

The 2013 Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed carries a $209,600 base price with options reaching $245,440 although we could not get any numbers to show on the online configuration.

2013 BMW M5
bmw m5 sedan 13

2013 BMW M5.

I have to say that while I like BMW, I do not like the look of the current M5, despite that it is one of the few in this class available with a manual transmission.

It has a 4.4-liter, 32-valve 560-hp V-8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and starts at $92,395, which includes a $895 destination charge and a $1,300 Gas Guzzler Tax. We chose the no-charge Black Sapphire Metallic paint, Black on Black Merino Leather and the Aluminum Trace Trim and then started on the packages, which included:

• Driver Assistance Package $1,900
• Executive Package $5,500 (required with the Driver Assistance Package)
• 20" M light alloy wheels Style 343M $1,300
• Head-up Display $1,300
• Bang & Olufsen Sound System $ 3,700
• BMW Apple iPhone Media / BMW APPS Version Snap In Adapters $250
• BMW iPad Holder $182
• BMW Carpeted Floor Mats $152
• BMW Rubber Floor Mats $84

It drive me crazy that in a car of this price, they have to charge you $84 for floor mats, just seems so petty, but getting the Manual Transmission is free. The total MSRP as built came to $105,079.

cadillac cts v sedan 13

2013 Cadillac CTS-V Sedan.

Just a few days ago we posted an article called 5 Cars I Want and included the Cadillac CTS-V Wagon. I am also a fan of the CTS-V Coupe, but here, for obvious reason, we include the CTS-V Sedan.

The world’s fastest production sedan maintains its title with a 556 HP V8 engine that moves it from 0–60 in a blistering 3.9 seconds with an MSRP of $64,515. High-performance, oversized Brembo® brakes provide the V-Sedan with massive stopping power. The driver-focused interior delivers unwavering control of the sedan’s stunning power.

When starting our build, we see that it is available in just one trim level. Standard. We've selected the no charge Radiant Silver Metallic paint, with the no charge Ebony/Ebony, Leather Seating Surfaces with Sueded fabric inserts, the no charge 19" painted aluminum wheels and the no charge 6-speed manual transmission (a huge plus).

Additional charges started when we selected the:

• Yellow Brembo® brake calipers $595
• Wheels Locks $115
• UltraView® power sunroof $1,150
• RECARO® performance seats $3,400
• All-weather floor mats $140
• Sueded steering wheel and shift knob $300

This brings the total to $71,110.

jaguar xjl ultimate 13

2013 Jaguar XJL Ultimate.

The 2013 Jaguar XJL Ultimate has an MSRP of $155,000 and is one of nine variants to choose from. It has 510 HP from its 5.0 liter 32v Supercharged V8 mated to an 8-Speed ZF electronic automatic transmission with Jaguar SequentialShift™.

Some of the standard features include:
20-inch Maroa-style forged alloy wheels with performance tires, Two individual rear seats in semi-aniline leather, heated and cooled, with recline, massage and four-way lumbar adjust, Rear-console power passenger table with toughened smoked glass, Full partition leather trimmed center console with Phosphor Blue accent lighting and storage areas and Illuminated center chiller box with beverage present to name a few.

This models offers one paint and wheel choice. The Black Amethyst Metallic paint and the 20" Maroa Alloy Wheels. For the interior, we chose the Jet seats with Jet upper facia in Semi-Aniline Leather with Tonal stitch and Jet Leather headlining with Mauveine flock lining for the chiller box and center console and Herringbone was the only option for the trim.

When we looked at adding a few options, we learned that "This vehicle is equipped with a high level of standard equipment. No additional options or packages are available."

A few accessories we added were the Chrome Tailpipe Finishers, the Luggage Compartment Liner and the Utility Mats. None of which increased the total price, with even included the $895 Destination Charge, bringing the total to $155,000.

maserati quattroporte gts 13

2013 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS.

In 1963, Masarati installed a racing engine creating a high-performing luxury sedan and this new Quattroporte continues to be the embodiment of the classic grand tourer and remains a celebration of elegance, technology and power with its 3.8 liter twin turbo V-8, capable of 523 HP, the most powerful engine offered by Maserati. It accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and exceeds 190 mph.

The Quattroporte is offered in three variations, the Quattroporte, the Quattroporte S and the Quattroporte Sport GTS.

We started our build with the Bronzo Siena paint with the 21" Titano wheels and yellow calipers. The interior included the Nero Upper dash board with the Nero Dashboard and the Nero seats, headliner and steering wheel. For the trim, we chose the Carbon Fiber.

Once you build your car, you can even output a PDF, but it contains no pricing, in fact, there is no pricing at all on the website so we visited LeftLane's Configurator (although the options offered here did not match Maserati). For example, the did not have the 21" Titano wheels, and offered the yellow calipers, which is not on the Maserati site. They have a $135,200 MSRP.

options included the:
• Yellow Calipers $800
• Skyhook Electronically Controlled Suspension System $3,200
• Front Park Sensors $860
• Heated Rear Seat $875
• Carbon Fiber interior trim $3,075
• Four-zone automatic climate $2,100
• Inox sport foot pedals
• Hi-fi sound system Bowers & Wilkins

Adding $22,185 to $135,200, totaling $157,385, but I have to be honest, I'm not sure that number is accurate to the build.

mercedes benz s65 amg 13

2013 Mercedes Benz S65 AMG.

The 2013 Mercedes Benz S65 AMG is going to give you 12 MPG city and 19 highway, although if you buy this, you're probably not concerned since it also has a $212,000 MSRP. This is because the Handcrafted 6.0 liter biturbo V-12 produces 621 HP.

This is one car that looks great in black, but we chose the Palladium Silver Metallic paint for our build. We think it looks great with the 20" AMG Twin Five-Spoke forged alloy wheels with black details for an additional $500.

For the interior, we went with the black AMG leather with
• carbon fiber and black piano lacquer trim $2,850
• Illuminated Door Sill $1,300

The inclusion of the $905 Destination Charge and the $2,100 Gas tax bring the tab to $219,655.

porsche panamera turbo s 13 1

2013 Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

With 550 hp, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S will get you from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds with a top track speed of 190 mph and has a highway consumption rating of 23 mpg.

The MSRP is $175,300, but it is not very difficult to get that number to climb very quickly. There are a total of 10 Panamera variants, starting with the Panamera, Panamera Platinum Edition, Panamera 4, Panamera 4 Platinum Edition, Panamera S, Panamera 4S, Panamera S Hybrid, Panamera GTS, Panamera Turbo and our chosen vehicle, the Panamera Turbo S.

Our build starts with the no-charge Mahogany Metallic paint matched with the 20" RS Spyder Design Wheels.

The first overage is the $975 destination charge. Porsche even charges $470 for the All-Season tires (for the 20" Alloy Wheels)

Additional options include:
• Espresso Natural Leather $0
• SportDesign Package $4,160
• Rear spoiler in black $0
• Bi-Xenon™ Headlights w/ Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), Black $575
• ParkAssist, Front and Rear, with Reversing Camera $655
• Thermal & Noise Insulated Glass $1,240
• Roof Transport System $400
• Rear Wiper $360
• Tailpipe Trim Sports Exhaust System $690
• 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) with Auto Start Stop $0
• Adaptive Cruise Control $2,490
• 14-way Power Seats with Memory Package $0
• Four-Zone Climate Control $1,020
• Large Center Console in the Rear Compartment $2,300
• Power Sunblind for Rear Compartment $340
• Power Sunblind for Rear Side Windows $450
• Interior Lighting Package for Rear Compartment $595
• SportDesign steering wheel with paddles shifters $0
• Sport Chrono Clock in Guards Red $500
• Porsche Crest Embossed on Front and Rear Head Restraints $285
• Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System $4,190

This brought the total to $201,515 and believe me when I tell you that there were countless other options available that we passed on that could easily raise this to a point that would make one feel very extravagant.

The recap of MRSP vs Build costs is as follows:

MSRP: $226,850 Build: ?

2013 AUDI S8
MSRP: $110,895 Build: $126,045

MSRP: $209,600 Build: $245,440

2013 BMW M5
MSRP: $92,395 Build: $105,079

MSRP: $64,515 Build: $71,110

MSRP: $155,000 Build: $155,000

MSRP: $135,200 Build: $157,385

MSRP: $212,000 Build: $219,655

MSRP: $175,300 Build: $201,515

Strictly looking at MSRP, the 2013 Cadillac CTS-V is the bargain here at just $64,515. Even their fully built cost of $71,110 is lower than all of the other car's starting price. The highest price comes from the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, and of course we realize that who ever is looking at that, is not even considering the Cadillac.

While all of these cars are extremely impressive, and barring the actual dollars involved, I would choose the Porsche Panamera Turbo S.

If you want one of these and are not willing to pay the "new car price", here are a few listed on eBay...
