2003 Rolls-Royce Phantom "The Spirit of Ecstasy" hood ornament. Model by the sculptor Charles S. Sykes in 1911 (Rolls-Royce did not have a hood ornament at this time) and was probably based on an earlier mascot of Eleanor Velasco Thornton that was commissioned by Lord John Walter Edward-Scott-Montagu (of his secretary and mistress) who was an early automobile enthusiast. The earlier ones are about 6 or 7 inches (which now go for around $3000 to $5000), and later ones were 3 and 4 inches tall.

On December 30, 1915, the "SS Persia", while on her way to India, was torpedoed off Crete by a German submarine. Thornton and Montagu were both aboard when it sank. Montagu survived but Thornton did not.
