2006 is the year when Abt celebrates its 110th company anniversary. So far, four generations of the family from Kempten have put their heart and soul into the development of the enterprise. Right from the start automobiles have been their keen passion. The anniversary shows that tradition is very important for Abt but future trends are equally significant. This is the only way to keep on the road to success and expand continuously over such a long period of time.

Abt's story starts with the foundation of a smithy -- and with a good idea: Johann Abt develops a device with which horse carriages are prepared for the cold Bavarian winters. Due to this concept, business and individuals are able to avoid having to buy expensive sledges. The first cars which are more like carriages driven by an engine are also repaired by the smith. The company grows with the trend-setting technology and more than eight decades ago, first contact is established with the brands of later Auto Union. The co-operation with the four rings proves to be a long term relationship and is maintained until today.

Since the 50s, the successes in motor sports have been applied on the tuning business. Top priorities of the Bavarian team are performance increase and durability as well as fulfilling customer wishes in terms of sportiness and exclusive design at all times. So as to be able to achieve these targets, a keen sense for trends is required and this is exactly what makes Abt Sportsline the largest tuner for vehicles of the Volkswagen group. Besides power upgrades, suspension modifications, body styling parts, wheels and exhaust systems, the product range of the high-tech smithy also comprises complete vehicles.

"In our headquarters in Kempten, we have developed a structure that enables us to manufacture cars ourselves," explains managing director Hans-Jürgen Abt. With the foundation of Abt Sportsline GmbH in 1991 a new era begins. The name stands for design and technology competence which meets highest quality demands. This is also the reason why Abt Sportsline is official Audi and VW Service Partner. The Abt engineers have taken on the challenge of demanding engines which are constantly being improved as well as the challenge of meeting the changing wishes of their customers. Therefore Abt Sportsline works continuously to develop new technologies which combine improved environmental compatibility, reduced consumption values but also increase the power at the same time. In this connection, the know-how which has been gained over many years is irreplaceable.

Motor sports.
The motor sports team from Kempten has popularized the name Abt Sportsline all over the world. Among the team's greatest successes are the title in the German Touring Car Championship (STW) in 1999 through Christian Abt and, of course, the championship title in Europe's most popular touring car championship, the DTM.

In 2002 Laurent Aiello clinched the title for Abt Sportsline and in the season 2004 Mattias Ekström accomplished the same feat. What is more, by clinching the title as Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline for the first time, the Bavarians fill the DTM's history books. Also in 2006 Abt Sportsline was official Audi works team in the DTM and clinched the third and fourth position in the overall standings with Tom Kristensen and Martin Tomczyk, respectively.

I test drove this car. It was like silk. Though it felt long, it was quite responsive. It feels great and very smooth. The rear seats are TINY, but if you need them in a pinch, you know they're there. Not good for very big people.
