Established in 1988 as a subsidiary of parent company Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), Subaru Tecnica International (STI) was formed, in part, to manage Subaru motorsports activities, including the company's participation in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Since their first full season of WRC competition in 1990, STI has helped Subaru and the Subaru World Rally Team (SWRT) to capture three consecutive WRC Manufacturers' Championships (1995-1997) and three WRC Drivers' Championships.

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. The Subaru Impreza WRX STi (also referred to as simply, STi) is a high-performance version of the Subaru Impreza WRX, tuned by Subaru Technica International. Originally sold only in Japan and Europe, Subaru began selling the STi in North America in 2004. Available in the Japanese domestic market with a 2.0 L engine, the North American STi features a 2.5 L powerplant. The STi weighs nearly 3300 lb.
